Neurobiological foundations of neurologic music therapy: rhythmic entrainment and the motor system

چکیده
Entrainment is defined by a temporal locking process in which one system's motion or signal frequency entrains the frequency of another system. This process is a universal phenomenon that can be observed in physical (e.g., pendulum clocks) and biological systems (e.g., fire flies). However, entrainment can also be observed between human sensory and motor systems. The function of rhythmic entrainment in rehabilitative training and learning was established for the first time by Thaut and colleagues in several research studies in the early 1990s. It was shown that the inherent periodicity of auditory rhythmic patterns could entrain movement patterns in patients with movement disorders (see for a review: Thaut et al., 1999). Physiological, kinematic, and behavioral movement analysis showed very quickly that entrainment cues not only changed the timing of movement but also improved spatial and force parameters. Mathematical models have shown that anticipatory rhythmic templates as critical time constraints can result in the complete specification of the dynamics of a movement over the entire movement cycle, thereby optimizing motor planning and execution. Furthermore, temporal rhythmic entrainment has been successfully extended into applications in cognitive rehabilitation and speech and language rehabilitation, and thus become one of the major neurological mechanisms linking music and rhythm to brain rehabilitation. These findings provided a scientific basis for the development of neurologic music therapy.

Automatic Characterization of Digital Music for Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation
A computational rhythm analysis system is proposed to characterize the suitability of musical recordings for rhythmic auditory stimulation, a neurologic music therapy technique that uses rhythm to entrain periodic physical motion. Current applications of RAS are limited by the general inability to take advantage of the enormous amount of digital music that exists today. The system aims to ident...
متن کاملThe effect of music-therapy based on rhythmic activities on visual motor perception of children with autism spectrum disorder
Introduction: Among the problems of children with autism spectrum disorder is the presence of abnormalities in sensory processing and perceptual movement disorders that can cause many behavioral problems in this group of children. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of music-based therapy on rhythmic activity on visual visual perception of children with autism spectrum disorder....
متن کاملThe ecology of entrainment: Foundations of coordinated rhythmic movement.
Entrainment has been studied in a variety of contexts including music perception, dance, verbal communication and motor coordination more generally. Here we seek to provide a unifying framework that incorporates the key aspects of entrainment as it has been studied in these varying domains. We propose that there are a number of types of entrainment that build upon pre-existing adaptations that ...
متن کاملMusic therapy in neurological rehabilitation settings.
The neurologic music therapy is a new scope of music therapy. Its techniques deal with dysfunctions resulting from diseases of the human nervous system. Music can be used as an alternative modality to access functions unavailable through non-musical stimulus. Processes in the brain activated by the influence of music can be generalized and transferred to non-musical functions. Therefore, in cli...
متن کاملRhythmic entrainment as a musical affect induction mechanism.
One especially important feature of metrical music is that it contains periodicities that listeners' bodily rhythms can adapt to. Recent psychological frameworks have introduced the notion of rhythmic entrainment, among other mechanisms, as an emotion induction principle. In this review paper, we discuss rhythmic entrainment as an affect induction mechanism by differentiating four levels of ent...
